2011 Special Events

2011 Spring, Summer & Fall Special Events Have Arrived!!!

      Come relax and have some fun! Join us at Well-Sweep Herb Farm in a presentation of informative lectures or courses where you learn to create, step by step, your own lovely handcrafted decorations or projects. Class prices include everything you’ll need to complete the project, and no prior experience is necessary. Many of the courses are hands-on; please dress accordingly. Please note: reservations are required for all classes.

Garden Trough

      Create two of your own hypertufa trough planters with that Old English look. We will be combining cement, perlite and other ingredients - so wear old clothes, bring rubber gloves and a face mask. Troughs will need to be left to dry with us for a few days. Reservations are required. $45.00.

Herbal Planter

      Come create a rustic container using grapevine, moss and soil. This outdoor circular piece, about 14", will then be planted with a selection of five fresh herbs. Bring gloves and clippers. Reservations are required. $35.00.

Gardening: Getting Started

      Learn the basics for creating your own edible garden - covering fruits, vegetables and herbs. Site determination, layout and design, soil preparation and correct plant selection will put you on the right path for a successful and bountiful garden. Reservations are required. $17.95.

Medicinal Herb Walk & Cherokee Storytelling

      David Winston, renowned herbalist and ethnobotanist, will present an educational walk to locate and identify common medicinal herbs in their native habitat. Learn about the healing properties of nature’s pharmacy, perhaps just beyond your own doorstep. Following the walk, David will share a Cherokee Indian story as we gather around a campfire.
      Mr. Winston is an internationally known lecturer as well as founder and president of Herbalist & Alchemist, Inc. In case of inclement weather, a slide presentation will be given in place of the walk. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. $36.00.

      Welcome to Well-Sweep Herb Farm! Enjoy a day of free informative lectures, presentations, as well as tours of our spectacular gardens.
      Lectures for the day begin at 9:30 with Growing and Preserving Culinary Herbs, followed by Easy Herbal Cooking at 10:00, then Exciting New Plants at 10:30, followed by a Perennial Garden Tour at 11:00 and 2:30.
      At 11:30 and 3:15 Garden Tours on the history and uses of both exotic and familiar herbs will be led by Cyrus Hyde, noted lecturer and collector.
      At 1:00 Butterfly Gardening features Rick Mikula from Hole in Hand Butterfly Farm. This fascinating presentation and walk will cover how to attract, keep and enjoy butterflies in your own garden.
      At 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 join Gene Sheninger and his amazing Border Collies in a demonstration of their skills in sheep and duck herding.
      Our largest selection of herb plants will be available on this day. Homemade refreshments can be enjoyed by all. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch. Free admission and parking.

Wonderful Lavender & Lunch

      Come and enjoy a relaxing, and educational day with lavender. Our special guest, Jennifer Vasich, authoress of The Lavender Gourmet will present a lecture on Cooking With Lavender at 10:30. This will be followed by a tasty lavender lunch featuring some of her published recipes from 12:00 to 1:00.
      At 1:15 Jennifer will cover the many healing benefits of lavender. Then enjoy a home Spa activity creating your very own bath salts and body butter to take home and enjoy. Come experience this wonderful fragrant herb. Reservations are required. $55.00

Midsummer Herb Festival

      Well-Sweep’s 22nd annual Midsummer Herb Festival celebrates ‘Horseradish - Armoracia rusticana’, the 2011 International Herb Association’s Herb of the Year. Enjoy a tasty luncheon prepared with this featured herb and several others. Come learn about the many virtues of this popular culinary plant. A lecture and tour through the garden will also be part of the day’s activities. Reservations are required. $34.00.

Lovely Lavender Projects

With lavender in full bloom, come and create two beautiful scented projects from this delightful flowering herb. You will make a 6" fresh lavender wreath and a woven wand to take home. Enjoy a relaxing summer afternoon working with one of our favorites. Refreshments will be served. A garden tour featuring our vast lavender collection will follow the class. Culinary Herb Wreath

Cooking with Herbs

      Have you ever tried rose geranium jelly or lovage potato salad? Come and discover the many uses of culinary herbs. Learn which herbs are the best for cooking, as well as how to grow, harvest and preserve them. The lecture will be followed by a delicious herbal-themed lunch. Reservations are required. $32.00.

      Our customers are what make Well-Sweep Herb Farm successful. To show our thanks, we invite you to visit us on this day and receive a 20% discount on all purchases. Free hamburgers, hot dogs, herbal punch and dessert will be served from 11:30 to 3:00.
      Come and experience our farm with a guided Perennial Garden Tour at 11 and 1, as well as Herb Garden Tours at 12:00 and 2:00. This is a wonderful time of year to enjoy our gardens and meet and chat with fellow garden enthusiasts. Free admission and parking.

      With fall in the air and the holidays approaching come and listen to a lecture on the versatility of this vine growing fruit. Soap Making

      Learn how to make all natural, homemade soap. Various methods and ingredients will be covered. Fall Harvest Celebration & Sherlock Holmes

      Join us for our 11th annual fall harvest gathering with distinguished guest, Sherlock Holmes - a fascinating fictional detective created by Scottish author - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
      A brilliant London based “consulting detective,” Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science skills to solve difficult cases. His sharp wit is highlighted in one of his popular quotes “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”
      Renowned actor, Neill Hartley, from the American Historical Theatre will portray the fascinating detective Sherlock Holmes. Hartley brings what he terms “full arrogance” to his role, is faithful to the short story, and adds authenticity with his skillful use of British and Scottish dialects.
      Come enjoy an entertaining evening with this fascinating detective, complemented with a delicious Victorian era meal. Reservations are required. $59.95.

Christmas In The Country

      At this time of year, the Well-Sweep garden fairies transform the shop into a Christmas wonderland. Featuring our ever expanding collection of handcrafted gifts and quality decorations; ornaments, wreaths, arrangements, santas, and angels overflow our shelves. Beginning on Saturday, November 5th.
      The greenhouse will also be stocked with a selection of attractive windowsill herbs, unusual tender perennials in bloom and unique topiary’s - all to help with your shopping list of special gift giving needs. After Thanksgiving, handmade fresh evergreen Christmas wreaths, sprays and arrangements will be available. Stop by for complimentary hot mulled cider and cookies.

Christmas Ornaments

Herb Garden Tours

      Farm lecture tours are available for groups of 12 or more. Tour our impressive culinary, medicinal, and formal herb gardens, and visit the gift shop and farm animals. Lecture topics include the history, uses, and cultivation of herbs, as well as herbal recipe suggestions. Tours may be tailored to meet your group’s specific interests or chosen topics.
      Offered May through October, tours are $5.00 per person with a non-refundable deposit of $25.00. Box lunches are available for groups of 15 or more; if you prefer to bring your own - a picnic area is provided. Call us today to schedule your group’s tour.
